peach-head-webI’ve been going through old boxes of drawings and sketchbooks and I came across this guy. I drew him back in ’96 as kind of an alternative for the famously scorned Atlanta Olympic Mascot, Izzy.

    Love the Peach Head!

I like it as well, but my first thought was that it would have been better if it was female.

My second thought , was that for some reason, it seems most mascots are male.

Hmm, that’s a good point I never gave much thought. My impressions are that originally mascots represented a specific team which is usually a men’s sport. At Georgia, in addition to the regular male mascot suit, we had a female mascot suit for the women’s basketball team, the “Lady Dawgs.” It’s a bit dangerous to have a mascot try and represent everything to everybody, ala Izzy. Hence the trend in the Olympics recently to use a series of mascots instead of just one. In Beijing, they used a record five mascots which represented different genders, Chinese traditions and even different regions. In Vancouver for the upcoming Winter Olympics, they’ll be using three. Besides, using multiple mascots sure doesn’t hurt souvenir sales!

Wonder why the Atlanta Olympics didn’t use a caricature of the Phoenix?

In fact a lot of folks thought that the Paralympics mascot, Blaze was the better of the two that year. He just happened to be a Phoenix.
