Since I attended the excellent SCAD workshops at Hero Con last year, I’ve been looking for high-quality classes and workshops that go into a little more detail. Specifically, I’m looking for short adult-appropriate workshops that working people like me who may not be able to enroll in a full-year program, can attend during the summer. Here is a list for 2009, I will update as I find more of them.

Devil Dog Patch

Patches I made while in the Marines. Aviators often wear a non-unit patch on their right shoulder, which is what this was designed for. The text says “teufelhunde,” German for “devil dog,” a traditional nickname for U. S. Marines. I strayed from the usual bulldog motif in favor of a pit bull, which to me, looks more devilish and resembles the devil dog fountain in Belleau, France. I designed both color and “desert” versions, but only the desert version was made. I’ve still got a hundred or so of these 3-inch patches I’d be happy to part with for $5 each, just send me an email. Oh, and I’ll send a free patch to the first 5 people to email me with their name and address!

Lilov Fencing Academy

Here are some logo designs I did some years ago for Lilov Fencing Academy.

A contemporary design concept.

The triangular crest which was eventually used by the school.

The color logo as it appeared embroidered on a towel.

Leaning more towards the traditional, LFA’s current logo features a two-headed eagle wearing fencing masks on both heads!

If you are interested in commissioning a logo, send me an email for a quote. Prices are flat-rate, reasonable, and include three concept designs to choose from.

The day has finally come! Here are the designs. Please express your interest in the comments or vote in the thread at Fencing.net. The sticker with the most interest will be the one I order first! (Note: this is not an advance order, but just to gauge the sticker’s popularity. Actual stickers will go on sale at a later date.) All stickers will be approximately 4″ wide on heavy-duty UV resistant white vinyl, suitable for outdoor automotive use, and will have a white outside border.

PS, Please don’t “borrow” my designs. Fencing is a small community, I’ll probably find out. ; )

Peach Head Mascot

I’ve been going through old boxes of drawings and sketchbooks and I came across this guy. I drew him back in ’96 as kind of an alternative for the famously scorned Atlanta Olympic Mascot, Izzy.

Inking in Flash

Yay! Thanks to Bob Flynn at the Drip Blog, I just learned how to ink and color in Flash CS3. This fellow is the result:

He’s a Gila Monster, if you don’t recognize the animal. Really handsome lizard, too. I’m surprised there aren’t more teams using them as mascots, actually. I’ve been drawing animal mascots as sort of a portfolio project, and I just love the way the linework comes out in Flash. Plus, it’s all vectors! Infinitely scalable! I’m quite happy with the results. Thanks, Bob!!!
