Illustration class

I had the benefit of taking a graduate-level illustration class this quarter. My ideas about composing a picture and conceptual thinking have improved greatly through the exercises we’ve done in class. Below are two of the assignments, a music gig poster (MTB is from my hometown and one of my favorite bands) and a spot illustration for an article about mental illness. I know, I’m a bit of a style chameleon. The MTB poster is the closest drawing so far to the direction I would like to go with my artwork. I really had fun with both of these assignments though!

Drawing for Sequential Art

Here are some of the projects from my most recent class, Drawing for Sequential Art. It was more or less a class in traditional comic book penciling. Very different from how I usually draw, but good practice in perspective, storytelling, and acting.

I’m aware some of the previews are broken over at my portfolio page…I will try to get that fixed soon! Over the break ‘ll be working on a site overhaul as well.

Since I attended the excellent SCAD workshops at Hero Con last year, I’ve been looking for high-quality classes and workshops that go into a little more detail. Specifically, I’m looking for short adult-appropriate workshops that working people like me who may not be able to enroll in a full-year program, can attend during the summer. Devil Dog Patch

Patches I made while in the Marines. Aviators often wear a non-unit patch on their right shoulder, which is what this was designed for. The text says “teufelhunde,” German for “devil dog,” a traditional nickname for U. S. Marines. I strayed from the usual bulldog motif in favor of a pit bull, which to me, looks more devilish and resembles the devil dog fountain in Belleau, France. I designed both color and “desert” versions, but only the desert version was made. I’ve still got a hundred or so of these 3-inch patches I’d be happy to part with for $5 each, just send me an email. Oh, and I’ll send a free patch to the first 5 people to email me with their name and address!

Lilov Fencing Academy

Here are some logo designs I did some years ago for Lilov Fencing Academy.

A contemporary design concept.

The triangular crest which was eventually used by the school.

The color logo as it appeared embroidered on a towel.

Leaning more towards the traditional, LFA’s current logo features a two-headed eagle wearing fencing masks on both heads!

The day has finally come! Here are the designs. Please express your interest in the comments or vote in the thread at Fencing.net. The sticker with the most interest will be the one I order first! (Note: this is not an advance order, but just to gauge the sticker’s popularity. Actual stickers will go on sale at a later date.) All stickers will be approximately 4″ wide on heavy-duty UV resistant white vinyl, suitable for outdoor automotive use, and will have a white outside border.

PS, Please don’t “borrow” my designs. Fencing is a small community, I’ll probably find out. ; )
