As a graphic designer and sports fan, sports logos are one of my favorite things to look at, and there’s certainly a lot of great logo design out there. There’s a nice article over at AIGA about Todd Radom, a prominent sports logo designer. And while you’re at it, check out Chris Creamer’s sports logo page, which is really a great resource for modern (and classic) sports logos from across the world.

So this brings me to a question about your brand identity. Do you have a visual identity that sets your club apart? If not, consider adopting one which you can use on everything from advertising to merchandising. Here are a few tips:

1. Is your club modern or classical? Competitive or casual? Think about what image you want to project.

2. Choose a color scheme of two to three colors. Any more will drive up your printing costs and reduce effectiveness.

3. For a distinct identity, think about what unique feature sets your club or location apart. Elements from your city’s logo or coat of arms could be adopted (but be wary of copyrights and don’t plagiarize).

4. Consider including a standard club t-shirt or stickers as part of your initial membership package. After all, your members will be doing a lot of your advertising for you!

With a little thought and purpose behind it, your logo can become a spokesman for your club. It tells people at a glance what you are all about, and sets your fencers apart with a distict look that makes your club look more professional.
