Comic Exercise: Alien Scouts

Posting has been slow because I’ve been doing mostly exercises in my classes. Here’s one I thought was funny- we had to create a 1-page comic that started “You’re at home and hear a knock at the door. You open the door to find ?” I did three different versions but I suppose this one flows the best.

Since I attended the excellent SCAD workshops at Hero Con last year, I’ve been looking for high-quality classes and workshops that go into a little more detail. Specifically, I’m looking for short adult-appropriate workshops that working people like me who may not be able to enroll in a full-year program, can attend during the summer. Inking in Flash

Yay! Thanks to Bob Flynn at the Drip Blog, I just learned how to ink and color in Flash CS3. This fellow is the result:

He’s a Gila Monster, if you don’t recognize the animal. Really handsome lizard, too. I’m surprised there aren’t more teams using them as mascots, actually. I’ve been drawing animal mascots as sort of a portfolio project, and I just love the way the linework comes out in Flash. Plus, it’s all vectors! Infinitely scalable! I’m quite happy with the results. Thanks, Bob!!!

Things are about to get interesting…and a lot harder to draw! Also, I’d like to remind readers to check the Club page periodically, because I update it both as the story progresses and as I feel the need to elaborate on certain characters that may not be obvious in the story.

The Return of the Olympians

I’m enjoying this style so far, playing with the negative spaces. I think I’ll keep it up for a while. The comic is still more labor intensive than I’d like it to be, though. In fact, next week I’m not at all confident that I’ll be able to get my page done, due to a clinic I’m attending next weekend. I haven’t missed a page yet, though, in 24 weeks, so I’m not anxious to break my streak. I will at least promise to have something new up next week, even if it’s just artwork, so please stop by anyway. Plus I’ll have some juicy stuff from the fencing clinic to blog about later that week, so there’s still lot’s of good stuff for you!

T’s Place.

I dropped my husband at the airport today and just happened to be there when one of the squadrons was returning from deployment. I lingered for awhile to see if there was anybody I knew and to let my son listen to the band. My heart goes with those guys every single time.

I’ve introduced a Marine character so that I can bring up some issues that are important to me. Which reminds me…I’m behind on some care packages I owe! Maybe on one of my blog posts I’ll write about how/what to include in a care package.

Whoa, I got this one done early this week! Some days it seems the less time I spend on a comic, the better it turns out because I don’t obsess over the details.

WOW. This page took me a lot longer than it should have. The last few pages dragged on a little longer than I meant them to. I need to cram more story and dialogue into less space. I’ll work on that. Hopefully I haven’t lost anyone to boredom yet!
