iWeb Galleries Repaired

The Mascot Gallery is fixed! I ran this nifty little script I found via MacFixIt, then republished my pages and now Firefox 3 renders these pages correctly. Thanks for your patience!

Firefox 3 breaks iWeb

Apologies to anyone trying to view some of my iWeb pages including the Mascot gallery, it seems that Firefox 3.0 has broken the picture galleries. I hope they fix this soon, but in the meantime I’m going to have to run a script in iWeb then republish. I’ll try to get this done by the end of the week. iWeb is really a pretty good program and the right direction for web design (dummy proof) but it has a long way to go in terms of compatibility. I just got a book on Dreamweaver and hope to learn the basics of that program soon. But if you’re totally new, iWeb is a great place to start. Having built sites in both iWeb and WordPress I’m ready for the next level. Put me in, coach!

Trouble viewing Comics

My apologies to anyone having trouble viewing my first three pages. Uploading three pages at a time is proving to be more of a problem than I thought. Two pages up now, I’ll get the third up early Monday.

Site Upgrade

I just upgraded my WordPress theme to ComicPress 2.5, and the new features are lookin’ good. Setting up this website has been very educational for me:

I set up my other sites in iWeb, which is pretty simple but lacked the advanced features I needed to make this site work the way I wanted. I can, however, recommend it for novices to the web who wish to set up family sites, photo albums, or simple commercial sites. It should be noted that features like blog comments and push-button uploading are only available if you have a .Mac account.

Blogger is probably the next easiest, which I used to get a site up and running for my fencing club, and it is a great choice for those who wish to start blogging, plus, it’s basically free hosting on the web.

I chose WordPress for this site, for no other reason than most of the other web comic artists were using it. I have been fairly pleased with the depth of features. You can download a plugin for almost anything, and there are countless themes available which you can tweak with a little knowledge of CSS. If you don’t have your own hosting provider, WordPress.com offers free blogs much like Blogger does.

Speaking of CSS, I started this whole web thing less than six months ago not even knowing how you get stuff from your computer to the internet, much less using HTML and CSS. But I’m gradually learning as I go, with a few tools in my hip pocket that have helped immensely: Firefox and the plugins CSS Viewer and Web Developer. CSS Viewer allows you to hover over any area in a page and it tells you its properties. Web Developer allows you to edit the CSS code of a page (not permanently) to see what it will look like. Not sure what color to use on your header? Simply make the changes you want and then copy and paste from the editor to your CSS file. Bam! How easy is that? HUGE props to the folks who made these tools!
