The story so far: Coach Volkov runs the ROC Fencing Club, where he coaches students in Olympic-style fencing. His top foil student, Arianna, has left the club after performing poorly at the Beijing Olympics. But a new contender for fencing stardom has arrived on the scene. Serik, a young man from Kazakhstan, has earned Ari’s spot as Coach’s elite student. But Andrei is worried that there may be more to this young fencer below the surface. Cam has taken him to a sizeable tournament in a nearby city to test out the competition.

Coach Andrei Volkov

Coach Andrei Volkov- a brash, arrogant fencing coach with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. He immigrated to the United States after coming up against opposition to his radical ideas by the fencing establishment in his homeland.

Serik Musukayev- a mysterious young sabre fencer from Kazakhstan, Serik arrived just before Coach Volkov left for Beijing, when he was promised a chance to try out for one of Coach’s few elite student slots. Failing to pass the test, he is granted a reprive when Ari decides to leave the club.

Arianna DiGrigio

Arianna “Ari” DiGrigio- originally from Italy, this tenacious foil fencer has the drive and talent to go all the way, and would do anything to get there. She makes the US Olympic team under unusual circumstances, only to be defeated in the round of 16 by one of her former countrymen, Rossi of Italy. Denied her ultimate goal, she leaves the club to train under one of Coach’s rivals.

Cameron “Cam” Tucker- Originally a foil fencer, this college sophomore recently made the switch to epee. She took an immediate interest in Serik when he arrived and is hoping to get to know him better.

Diane “Grace” Bak- A dedicated epeeist and successful businesswoman. Grace is one of Coach’s closest friends and helps him with club management and finances.

Drew Jensen- A grad student who fences whatever weapon suits him at the time. Drew took Russian as an undergraduate and is helping Serik learn English. He is Cam’s best friend.

SSgt “T” Torres- A Marine helicopter mechanic and crewchief at the local air base, this sabre fencer returned to fencing after his last deployment. Toughness and devotion to duty mask the pain over the recent separation with his wife. T shares his empty home with Serik and seems glad for the company.
